Primer on Hydraulic cylinder system and repair

hydraulic-cyliner-actuatorWe complete our series of hydraulics. I have some questions in the comment section was connected to hydraulic cylinders, so I thought we had a quick look at the real workhorse of the circuit to take.

Cylinders are the reason for the hydraulic system. They take the flow of fluid from the pump and magically transformed into mechanical energy. There are many types of cylinders, which could be about to run a farm scenario. Each chapter in itself could take one to introduce and explain. There are vane-type cylinders that provide the movement. Many newer tractors have this as part of their power units.

Another is the hydraulic actuator rotary engine found in logging winches and the like. Probably the most common is the simplest type of piston cylinder, which we will focus on this point.

tractor hydraulic systemThere are two main types of piston-cylinder type in common agricultural use. The first is the single acting cylinder. These cylinders provide power in one direction. Oil under pressure, has allowed only one side of the cylinder, the load increases. An external force like gravity or a spring is necessary to pull the rod in the housing of the cylinder. Notable examples of this type can include the hydraulic cylinder on a tractor three point hitch. The second type is a double acting cylinder. This type can exert pressure to the cylinder in both directions, depending on the flow of oil. It provides hydraulic power to extend and retract a front-end loader on a bucket.

For a little ‘better understand how a cylinder is a simple mental image of the equation. Photo of a hollow cylinder like a piece of pipe with a rubber seal on the bottom. At the bottom of the tube and a hole is drilled and threaded a tube with which permit the flow of oil inside and out. Tube is inserted into the wafer-like piston is that the rubber seals or plastic around its perimeter, which keeps the oil penetrates into the past. The piston slides up and down the hole of the tube. By the middle of the piston rod has a smaller diameter that is narrow, with a nut on one side with the rod extending from the open tube on the other. Screwed to the open side of the tube is a cap with a hole in the bar late and keep the bar well aligned with the pipe and the piston. It is also coated with a rubber gasket to prevent oil leakage and the penetration of rain. Somewhere at the top of the tube there is a hole that lets air in and out of the tube, depending on the piston. This image is a simplified hydraulic cylinder. Since the oil is pumped through our line of supply of oil pushes the piston in the hole and creates the mechanical action at the end of the bar. A spring or the action of the gravity of the heaviest loads and pull the piston rod. Oil returns to tank.

ramA cylinder is very similar to a cylinder of ram, but they are different. A ram type cylinder has a piston in the cylinder bore. The bar itself is the piston and seals the end of the cylinder bore are O-rings placed in grooves opposite side of the housing cylinder, not held in a removable cap. His work is the same for single-cylinder, but it tends to have a lower surface for oil to push against, as the auction is usually much smaller in diameter than a typical piston. It has some advantages. The bar is usually more resistant to bending and due to lateral loads. The packaging is generally easier to reach and replace. N. air vent is necessary because the oil throughout the chamber interior of the housing cylinder fills. Again the spring or the action of gravity is necessary to withdraw.

Dual structure of the cylinder is very similar to the simple effect.

Picture our example above, and then, instead of a ventilation hole at the endceb_cylinder-mount of the housing cylinder only a picture of a threaded hole with other smoke-related. That about the only difference. The oil is pumped into the hole on the back of others will be pulling in the piston and cause the opposite direction. Granted, there may be another piston which configuration to accommodate additional or wiper seals and seal the end cap can also be extra, but the basic make-up is the same.

As the piston rod takes up space in the cylinder bore and piston must understand that the force of the retraction stroke of the cylinder will be slightly less than the extension of a stroke. These two types of cylinders are ‘unbalanced’ cylinders. A cylinder balanced, perhaps some power steering cylinders on tractors, there is a rod attached to each side of the piston. This ensures a uniform pressure on the piston surface and results in power output delivered by the cylinder in both directions.

There are many types of capsules that can be found at the cylinder ends. Some lives are simple types, others have some employees that the assembly ring in place. Others have an internal ring groove with a single access hole on the side of the housing cylinder for disposal. Some may be rusted in place, while others a puzzle to scratch their heads to figure out how to remove. The manuals and diagrams, tech shares may help identify the type you could work. Some suggestions are as follows. All the small access hole on the side has been common for units Massey Ferguson industrial. It is a square of soft file that wraps the remote configuration of sealing and applies it to the hole cylinder and hold it in place.

Take a small screwdriver and starts at the end of the stock of the hat of silk, while the bottom with a wrench to rotate. Will roll-out of the hole and twist bottom. Be careful not to spoil it or enter the wrong way, like the other side, a small hook ninety degrees in the piece, sure to be twist off cap. Cylinders FRONTLOADER Many have internal snap ring that holds the configuration of the CAP, however. By removing the cap of the cylinder pressure can be manually flush with the cylinder diameter so elusive that exposed internal snap ring. It will look outside and the hood.

wiper tractorYou might notice that when you replace the cylinder seals the cap usually remove the piston and the dismantling of removing the shaft, so that the cap can be slipped at the end of the auction. Nick Note and sharp edges when doing this, because they cut all the seals that pass over them. A file or fine sandpaper will help smooth out. Also be sure to use a nut on the end of auction that stops surely right. It can be very annoying to be detached from the piston rod, because the nut is not locked.

Be careful when you remove a cylinder in order to ensure the direction of any seals or wipers observe. Proper installation requires the right direction at the time of installation. Minor groove in the cylinder bore can sometimes be removed using a cylinder loosely. Make and use a lubricant like honey turpentine solvent. Do not remove too much material as it will cause leaks in seals more recent. Care and inspect the shaft for straightness. A bent barrel will lead to a very slow or irregular cylinder, even if not connected to anything. (This is for you Tim, JD sickle bar.) A bent rod can only be replaced by a chromium coated material.

Mounting unit should include an exceptionally clean environment. Careful when you need new gaskets and O rings Use the same type of lubricant as the system needs during the reconstruction. When you install the piston and the cylinder cap is very useful to use a piston ring compressor to compress the seals without damaging them.

pop off valveRemember, this is only a brief summary to understand the cylinder and replacement of parts. Many newer applications have other functions, such as devices to control the race, pop off valves, bearings, valves, thermal protection and the like. If a question on what type of project you’re working with it would be wise to consult with a store that often works on hydraulic cylinders and equipment.
